Golfers looking for some winter sun were dealt a blow yesterday when the UK government announced that travellers returning from Cyprus from 4am GMT on Sunday must self-isolate for two weeks under the latest updates to Covid-19 travel regulations.

The changes apply to citizens from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

The decision to remove Cyprus from the safe list comes after a rise in coronavirus cases, with its seven-day rate of cases per 100,000 people rising to 112.

Explaining the decision, a spokesperson for the Department for Transport said: “There has been a consistent increase in Covid-19 cases per 100,000 of the population in Cyprus over the last two weeks, with a 79% increase in total cases over this time period.”

Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus is currently in the middle of hosting two European Tour events, although elite sports performers remaining in a Covid-19 support bubble will be exempt from quarantining on their return home.
