On 15 July Lyon & Turnbull hosted a rare golf auction at The Eden Club at Pittormie Castle that contained great memorabilia pieces for any golf collector. The auction lined up with the 144th Open Championship at St. Andrews. Invaluable, the world’s premier online auction marketplace, teamed up with Lyon & Turnbull to host the auction live online so collectors from around the world could bid.

The highest sale in the auction was the Irish Open medal won by Andra Kirkaldi in 1894 at Royal Dublin Golf Club, which sold at a hammer price of £8,500. The medal also came with Kirkaldi’s 1921 book, “Fifty Years of Golf”. This medal has added significance since it is considered to be the first Irish Open Championship medal awarded.

Another one of the highest sales in the auction was a small feather-filled golf ball made by William Gourlay, dating back to the 1830’s. The ball sold at a price of £5,000. William Gourlay had an unrivalled reputation in the 19th century as a maker of these feathery golf balls with his brother John.

While the auction did not yield any winners through Invaluable’s online platform, there were over 400 online viewers of the catalogue. GBN.com readers can now access Invaluable’s current golf memorabilia auctions.
