An invitation from Barenbrug to put theory into practice

Good groundsmanship means putting sound theory into practice, and that’s what top seed breeders, Barenbrug UK, will be urging turf professionals to do at the end of July

Barenbrug UK will host two special Open Days on 25th and 27th July at the world-renowned STRI (Sports Turf Research Institute) in Bingley, West Yorkshire, the UK’s only independent facility for testing amenity grasses. Greenkeepers, groundsmen, constructors and agronomists will be given a behind-the-scenes view of the latest turf research findings by STRI specialists. Guests will also see the ongoing practical trials of hundreds of grass cultivars. Barenbrug staff will encourage visitors to compare their varieties’ performance against others. They will also be demonstrating their high quality seed production standards – an eye-opening look at the purity of their seed and its germination.

Other topics of interest on the day include STRI presentations on biological/fungal disease problems due to climatic changes and man-made problems including wear, shade, stress, compaction.

Barenbrug say four new cultivars will be particularly eye-catching. Bareine is a perennial ryegrass with a fescue’s fineness of leaf, while Barifera is a European-bred creeping bent suited to UK conditions. The third, Barcampsia tufted hair-grass, is a shade-tolerant and hard-wearing variety showing great disease resistance and finally Barkoel, crested hairgrass , the ultimate low maintenance grass.

Places on the Open Days, which include lunch and refreshments, are free of charge. For further information contact Paul Johnson as soon as possible.
